      The problem is that some of the original footage was lost and needs to be re-created. Unfortunately, my box is done. What I’m going to do is put one together for someone else pretty soon and I will film the third part then. Thanks for watching! So sorry to be slow.

    What about the sliver solution that gets washed off? Does that interfere with the septic and environment like traditional b&w silver printing would do?

    Thank you for the video, are there any toners that are fairly benign? I have mast cell disease "allergic reactions to many things" and I want to try salt printing, I've somehow avoided toning after all of these years but it seems it's not avoidable with salt printing? Recommendations for other toning methods would be appreciated.

    • @BillSchwab
      @BillSchwab 14 днів тому

      Hi Amanda, I understand your predicament. There are some more benign toners that she could use, but not that would prolong the life of the image. For instance, you could use different teas, etc. If it helps, there’s not a lot of fumes or smells associated with these toners, so you may be able to work with them with nitrile gloves?

  • @lillianvalentine1975

    how are the fumes/VOC's with the toning kit? I've never done gold toning and have generally avoided toning due to the highvoc's/fumes. great video!

    • @BillSchwab
      @BillSchwab 13 днів тому

      Good questions. This kit doesn’t tend to have any noticeable fumes or smell.

    I'm surprised you mentioned copper as a way of increasing longevity. I once put a copper toned print in an exhibition. I was very concerned to see it fade towards the card mount after some months of display.

    • @BillSchwab
      @BillSchwab 15 днів тому

      It’s possible there are other factors that play. Perhaps fixing, etc. Copper wouldn’t be my first choice for longevity, but that seems a bit fast for it to fade.

    I really appreciate your video on the new cyanotype process. I noticed you created your solutions and coated your paper in ordinary light. I would have thought that since the new solution reacts quicker to UV exposure, that there would be a specific light control recommended for making solutions and coating/drying papers. When I read MIke Ware's instructions he also indicated that he recommends using a diluted acid for the development bath after exposure and before clearing/washing. Are you still getting amazing results with the approach you have followed in this video? Thanks again for your channel.

    • @BillSchwab
      @BillSchwab 18 днів тому

      Thanks for your comments! I am still getting great results going by what I have done in the video. For development, I have used a mild delusion of hydrogen peroxide, but that generally speeds up what happens in the drying process anyway. As for working in the lighted room, I have no problems with fogging as long as I am working fairly quickly and not letting things sit around too long in the light. My dark room is pretty much closed off to any extraneous UV light, so that that hasn’t been an issue. I hope this helps! Thanks again for watching!

    I am wondering how much sensitizer you are using. 2 drops does not seem much but it coats ok in the video. Usual advice is 2 ml for an 8x10. Scaling down to 4x5 means you need about 0.5ml. They must be big drops or you are able to coat with very little sensitizer on that paper.

    • @BillSchwab
      @BillSchwab 21 день тому

      It wasn’t only two drops. It was pretty much two eyedroppers full. Still, I like to use the bare minimum for coating the paper with the sensitizer. I found that it gives me a more smooth coating.

      @questor62 21 день тому

    For a pure analog workflow, no curves or Photoshop is required if you make wet or dry collodion negatives for making salt prints. I personally find that my salt prints made from collodion negatives look much richer and possess more depth using this approach.

    • @BillSchwab
      @BillSchwab 21 день тому

      I love working on a pure analog workflow, especially with collodion negatives but I find better control over the negatives building curves for them rather than trying to make my in camera negatives work through chemistry. It’s more a matter of personal preference than anything, I believe.

    Love salt prints! My results have been hit-and-miss so far, with the most common issue is having the image wash away, either in the salt water bath after exposure, or in the fixing. It's still fun, and when it works, there's nothing like it. Thanks Bill for posting this, and all your other videos!

    • @BillSchwab
      @BillSchwab Місяць тому

      Hey David! Thank you! I’m wondering if the problem might be too short of an exposure when it doesn’t work. Sometimes I think my image looks good and then I pull it out and most of it fades in the washing and subsequent fixing. Also, I found it sometimes my sensitizer goes bad after a while. We had that happen in a workshop once, and when I mixed up a new batch, everything was good again. Just some thoughts. Thank you for watching!

      @@BillSchwab Thank you Bill! Yes I've suspected inadequate exposure, and also drying the coated paper too quickly before using it. I get impatient waiting, I want to coat and print right away. I hadn't considered my chemicals, they have been around quite a while. I was hoping they'd stay good as long as they weren't put into solution. I appreciate your reply, thank you!

    What would you say is happening when you mix up the water and the sodium thiosulfate and it is not clear ? It’s cloudy looking 😢

    • @BillSchwab
      @BillSchwab Місяць тому

      Offhand, some things that might be happening, could be that the solution is saturated enough already, and that no more can be dissolved into it. More likely might be a water issue. My suggestion would be to try to mix it into some distilled water rather than tap water And see what happens. You could also try filtering what you have mixed already through a coffee filter and see if that helps.
